Traumatic Brain Injury
Before x-rays there were broken bones. We just could not see them on films. Similarly, Brain injury from Trauma is a very real injury that is not appreciated by health care providers, insurance companies, and lawyers. That may change with the advent of new technology but, for now, this injury requires highly specialized knowledge in the areas of biomechanics, neuroanatomy, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, neuropsychiatry, and brain-behavior relationships.
The brain is a miraculous entity and very resilient to minor trauma. Most concussions resolve with no residual symptoms. However, for as long as motor car crashes have been exerting forces on the head and neck, trauma and brain injury are more prevalent. Ever since workers have been building skyscrapers and falling off scaffolding, trauma and brain injury are more prevalent. When the trauma is caused by another, it is encumbent on the medical and legal professions to assist the injured person in recovery and compensation.
Because of its largely unappreciated nature, brain injury is often overlooked in Emergency Rooms. Many times it occurs without loss of consciousness. This leads to misdiagnosis, mistreatment, and misrepresentation.
